Athlete of the Month: Jackie McEnhill

Why Jackie??

Jackie is one of our original members from when we opened in late 2013. She shows up atleast 5 days a week and always works hard. Though we have different definitions of what “hard” is, she continues to buy into coaching and progress on everything across the board. Jackie is laid back and always has a good attitude. She treats everyone the same regardless of how long you’ve been a member. Jackie recently competed in his first Olympic Weightlifting Meet (CANUSA Winter Open.) She went 5/6 and took first place in her weight category!! Jackie allows the coaches and the 8 Mile philosphy to force her outside her comfort zone and excel. It’s opened her up to things she never knew she’d enjoy or be great at. Jackie is what 8 Mile is about.

How it all began:

I drove by Crossfit 8 mile everyday after work then the coaches started to come into work (Leo’s coney island) so I got talking to them. They all seemed cool so they told me I can try a class out. I had to talk my husband into checking a class out with me. It was just me, Jon and Coach Jamie. She crushed the WOD we had to do. Then after she was finished she was cheering us on to finish and kept pushing us which never happens at a normal gym and that’s when I knew this would be a great fit for us.

First Impression:

First thoughts was this is pretty hard! But everything can be scaled which was awesome and they always go around the class to watch your form and make sure everything is done correctly so you don’t hurt yourself.

Life before and after CrossFit:

Before Crossfit I use to play highschool sports year round then once I graduated I stopped doing everything and wasn’t going to the gym. I then picked up running and was doing 5k and 10ks all the time. Now that I joined 8 mile I realized how much I missed and enjoyed to workout and lift weights and have people around that enjoy doing the same. I’ve made many new friends that hold me accountable to going on a regular basis.

You (CrossFit 8 Mile) offer so much! Open gym is a huge plus for my schedule I’m lucky you offer OG! I’ve never done strongman which I discovered is my favorite that most Crossfit location don’t offer and our gym has and continues to add more equipment on a daily basis to help everyone.

The coaches push you to do better everyday and help with any questions you have even if they have to explain to me a million times and they the coaches have helped me step outside my comfort zone and participate in a lifting meet which I would of never done on my own but come to find out I actually enjoyed it.

Goals:

Goals would be overall:

-Stay in shape

-Show progress with my lifts

-Participate in a strongman compeition

-Get multiple strict handstand push ups

-Sub 2 minute Isabel (30 power snatches for time 135/95)
