The Difference Between Faith and Belief
This reflection is inspired by my father’s homily from the weekend, but its message resonates beyond the spiritual, especially in health and fitness. It’s about understanding change and transformation—and how belief and faith play a role.
Control in the Uncontrollable
As a competitive athlete, you quickly learn there’s a lot you can’t control. The league’s schedule, the weather, or the strength of your opponent—these are all out of your hands. But there’s plenty you can control:
- How hard you train.
- Your focus and execution of plays.
- Your sleep habits and how you manage distractions.
- Your mindset and performance.
In the world of health and fitness, you hold even more control. You decide your goals, your habits, and your level of commitment. But there’s an important question to ask: Do you believe in the destination you’re working toward?
Belief vs. Faith
Belief is the acceptance that something is true. Faith, on the other hand, is living it out.
For example, I might believe I can reach 200 pounds with 8% body fat. But without faith—without taking action and sticking to the plan—it won’t happen. Belief is the starting point; faith is the journey.
When you decide to make a change—whether it’s for your health, fitness, or overall well-being—you are in control of whether or not it happens. Sure, you might need help along the way: a nutrition coach, a trainer, or a supportive community. These people are like passengers you pick up on your bus route. They can guide you, encourage you, and point you in the right direction. But ultimately, you are the driver. They aren’t steering the wheel—you are.
Belief Fuels Action
If you don’t believe in your ability to succeed, you won’t take the steps needed to make it happen. But if you do believe, and you have faith in yourself to follow through, transformation is inevitable.
Faith means showing up when it’s hard. It means choosing discipline over convenience, consistency over shortcuts, and action over hesitation.
Because without action, goals are just dreams.
So, start with belief. Believe that change is possible, that you are capable, and that the destination is worth it. Then, live it out with faith.
You must believe before you can achieve.
