August Athlete of the Month: Bruce Van Dike

Why Bruce?

Bruce has a heart of gold. Bruce is the same person no matter who is around. He greets everyone as if they are the only one in the room. He’s been at 8 Mile for a while and continously puts in hard work. He’s rededicated himself not only within the 4 walls of 8 Mile, but in the kitchen. He’s putting in the time and the more often sought after, effort, to achieve the results he’s been looking for.

Bruce’s Story

Like most people, I had a membership at a local gym and would go about a daily workout with little guidance and following the same old routine. I always had a difficult time meeting my weight loss goals until I was introduced to CrossFit through a co-worker, Donna Ostler.

She became my first coach and mentor when we started working out in her garage after work. Doing CrossFit gave me the structure I needed. I loved the one-on-one coaching and appreciated that each WOD would not only be different, but also challenging. The fitness program reminded me of my time in the Marine Corp, which I truly loved and missed. When I discovered that a local CrossFit opened near my neighborhood, my husband Mike and I had to check it out. At CrossFit 8 Mile, we immediately felt at home by the great coaches and group of people who now feel like family.

Goals

To be recognized as the CrossFit 8 Mile athlete of the month is a great feeling, validating all of the hard work I’ve put in this past year to improve my overall health. I am still trying to reach my goal weight of 200 pounds with the hope that I’ll one day feel just as strong as when I was in my 20s and in the marines.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
