Athlete of the Month: June 2016- Kelley Lappan

Why Kelley??

Kelley is a CrossFit 8 Mile OG! She has been with us since day one and has been so strong during her CrossFit span. Kelley shows up 4-5x a week regardless of what should hold her back. Kelley workout during her pregnancy without skipping a beat. She was still doing workouts at 38 weeks! Now with her 4th child she still makes the gym just as much as before Briggs Lappan arrived. Kelley has tightened up her nutrition with help of 8 Mile staff and is already shedding baby weight and doing things she forgot she could do!

Kelley’s CrossFit Journey

I have always felt pretty athletic! I was a swimmer for a huge chunk of my life. After finishing high school, I swore I would never get back into the water! I would take exercise classes here and there but found nothing that I absolutely loved. I finally started running and I loved it! I would run 5 miles a day religiously. I took up yoga classes as well, and had a pretty good routine set in place! I was so strict with what I ate and felt guilty when I couldn’t fit a workout in.

I then met my husband Zack and we got married and started a family. When I got pregnant with my first son Max, I never made it a point to work out and decided I was going to eat whatever I wanted! I gained 70 pounds during that pregnancy and was the biggest I had ever been. I tried to lose some weight only to find out 5 months after delivering that I was pregnant again with my second son. So not only was I nowhere close to my starting weight, but I was looking at gaining more weight! I kept better control of my weight gain but still had a ways to go and thought I could do it on my own. After having my daughter I knew I had to do something.

I would go over to my brother Casey and sister in law Libby’s house and they would talk about this new thing they were doing called CrossFit. They were meeting new people and seemed to be having such a good time! They would sit there and talk about the workouts they were doing and I would sit there thinking there is no way I could do what they were doing!

Finally I talked my husband into doing the on ramp with me. After the first day of our on ramp I remember being so sore and thinking what am I doing! I pushed myself to finish, and during my process Nick started his process of opening his own gym. I knew that I was going to switch gyms, not only because I was following Casey and Libby but also because I knew that we were going to support Nick! I love that I can say I am an original member of CrossFit 8 mile!

I was at CrossFit 8mile for 2 ½ years when I got pregnant for the 4th time. I made a promise to myself that I would continue working out during that entire pregnancy. I felt amazing! I kept my routine and stuck to my 4-5 days a week of working out. I never let myself give up and I feel like I pushed myself the hardest I could every day. I worked out all the way to 39 weeks! After having my baby and taking the 6 weeks off that is required, I could not wait to come back!

I have made some amazing friendships that I know I will have for the rest of my life. I know that I am surrounded by coaches who care about my well-being, encourage me, and push me every day to be the best version of me. I love that I found something that my husband and I can do together that shows our kids how important a healthy life style is.

My Goals

I hope to continue to push myself to improve every day. I will continue to stay on track with my weight loss journey so that I can achieve the goals I have set for myself.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
