“Why Everyone Should Have Their Own Jump Rope”

                A jump rope is an elementary level piece of equipment. Everyone used these in gym class since first grade. Does that make them easy to use? Heck no! It does mean they are readily available in all shapes, styles, lengths and weights. They are a great training tool and at times can make or break your workout.

Size: Athletes can range from mile-high men to “good things come in small packages” ladies. It goes without saying that everyone needs different length ropes. Most commonly found jump ropes are adjustable.  Trying to ensure the randomly chosen rope from the wall is your length can be frustrating and time consuming. It can slow down your training and hang up a class. Hey maybe you got it right on the first try! But now what about this extra slack on the end of the handle the keeps hitting the rope, tripping you up? Get a rope that you know is the right length for you, giving confidence to crush “Annie”!

Weight: Everyone has a different preference on the weight of ropes. Speed cables are fast and great for people that can spin the rope quickly and already have double unders. They have the benefit of being less fatiguing on the grip for the “speed demons”. Down side is some individuals can’t feel where the rope is at and mistime the jump.  Slightly weighted ropes can be more taxing for some but typically have an improved bearing in the handle to ensure smooth revolutions. Heavier ropes are typically easier to learn on because you can feel where the rope is at.  Once again neither is better than the other. It is a matter of what works for you.

Double Unders: The infamous double under. When those two words are written on the board the class is divided. Some rejoice “I can do this RX!”, others  “stupid double unders….” . There is definitely coaching cues that can help develop this skill. It is a SKILL, a movement that needs to be refined. Refining the movement takes times and most of all practice. Practice will consist of isolated time working on the ever-so-sought-out ability. It’s full of misses and lash marks. Now assuming this is understood and required practice is performed, why would you want the variable of inconsistent weight and length jump rope? It’s one less thing to worry about.

Cost: Like anything else on the market you can find the most basic to items with all the bells and whistles. Rogue Fitness sells speed ropes starting at $15. Rx Smart Gear sells ropes topping out at around $43. Is one better then another? Depends on what your preference is. To have a custom piece of fitness equipment that gets used regularly, the cost is relatively low.  Go invest in one!

Next time you pull a kinked, too long, too light jump rope off the gym wall tell yourself “oh yeah, this is why I need my own.”  Avoid the hassle and headache and get your own.  It’ll ease your stress and state of mind in class and allow the flow of class to continue and result in a great training day.
