“Maintain The Standards”

It’s Bigger Than You Think

Hey Ninjas,
I usually preach to you about supplements and healthy food, but in this blog I want to write about your “Why”. What do I mean by that? Recently in class I was teaching push up progressions. Ugh, yes I know, I’m the push up police. BUT, I do this specifically with this movement BECAUSE it is an easy movement to cheat yourself at. Back to my story, as I was teaching the full range of motion I followed up telling the class how at the Games during “Murph”, athletes were getting “no repped” over and over on their push ups. Why? Because they didn’t do a full rep. After my “Murph” story someone yelled out, “so guys, when we are at the Games, we all now know what a push up should be”. Now, I’ve heard that plenty of times before, “So when we are at the games” and I get it, BUT that’s not the point It made me start thinking about why that response comes up? Why do people resort to that in defense? Is it because they are not seeing the bigger picture to CrossFit? Is it just about the Whiteboard? Is it just about someone getting the highest score or getting close to the highest score always? Is that what people think? I can tell you, it’s not and if you base your day on getting the highest score in the gym everyday, you’re doing it wrong.

If you focus so much on getting that PR or getting the fastest time, you’ll start to lose site of YOUR “Why”. CrossFit is about integrity. Do you think your family cares whether or not you got 3 rounds instead of 2? Do you think your friends care? How about your boss? Do you think they care? Chances are, no. But what they do care about is that you were the one who performed with integrity. That means more to them because that carries through to your relationships with them or how well you perform at your job. It’s about being the best version of YOU. That means if you base your best version of yourself off everyone else’s scores, you’re only cheating yourself. This is about comparing you to you. If you come in and perform a workout without integrity, not only will you have shitty movement, some shaved reps, maybe some shaved seconds, but most importantly, you’ll have stripped yourself of self-respect. That lack of self-respect will carry itself well into your personal life, my friends.

It will show up in your relationships, into your job and into how you feel about yourself. It speaks volumes. If you base your day on whether or not you got the best score, you’ll start to resent the sport of CrossFit. If you only come to the gym for the Whiteboard to compare yourself to others every single day Eventually wearing yourself out mentally and physically to the point where you don’t enjoy working out anymore. Finding yourself with some injuries and weaknesses due to shitty movement and lack of full rep schemes. Take time to make sure your reps are with integrity. I know sometimes we get caught up in a workout that has hundreds of reps and it can be monotonous and sometimes we find ourselves going through the motion, that’s one thing. But to intentionally cheat yourself out of getting better so you get a couple more reps will only set you back in the long run.

What is your “why”? To build solid relationships with others?  Is it to get physically stronger? Is it to build your endurance? Or is it to encourage the next generation of CrossFitters? Or maybe it’s all the above. Whatever reason it is, know that it starts with you being the best version of yourself.

I’ll leave you with this last nugget to ponder: “If It’s About The Whiteboard, You’re Doing It Wrong”- Ben Bergeron
